Episode 4: A Transmission From 1871.
TW: Language
Last episode we told you about when Sara found that first Hidden brick from 1871 that kicked off this whole Brick Madness for us both.
This time we give you brief history lesson on the English Hudson's Bay Company and how bricks first arrived in Clark County to build Fort Vancouver, where the first Catholic Settlement to the area was located.
John McLoughlin, a French Canadian employee in charge of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver, wrote his friend Father Blanchet in Montreal, Canada asking for help for the new settlement. Turns out McLoughlin himself is also connected to both Andrea AND SJ/Sara's family... and still seen haunting Oregon City.
McLoughlin's letter to Canada brought an order of nuns to the area, led by new Superior Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart. MoJo herself was the catalyst for the creation of the Hidden Brick Company, and she won't let us forget it.
The Synchronicity web making up this story begins to weave itself together as we start lining out the long line of connections surrounding the Hudson's Bay Company.
While the new French Canadian Catholic settlers mostly had good intentions towards the native Indigenous people in the Oregon Territory, they were probably just fine out here on their own without white interference and exploitation.
Mother Joseph's ties to the local Indigenous tribes are deeper than most locals realize. Multiple Anglicizations of the original Parizeau last name are a big cause of this confusion and can lead an omission from her typically told biography as the "Chief of the Black Robes".
MoJo's Been Trying To Talk To Us Much Longer Than I Thought.
Mother Joseph's forceful personality is something that has become equally frustrating and admired by us both as we have gotten to know her throughout the last year. The first time SJ was inside the haunted L.M. Hidden built Carnegie Library to investigate, (now the Clark County Historical Museum) she took a "random" photo of one of the shelves to get the vibe of the space, and the shelf had some interesting visual color variety. Months later when SJ began to become interested in Mother Joseph, they were surprised when reviewing the old photos in the library.
This is just one of the many ways she's communicated that she is the Leader in charge of Brick Management, through continued interactactions with many members of Team Moth. Just like in life, she appears to be endlessly busy over on whatever the "other side" is, and will go to whoever calls on her and needs her....even a couple of Witches.
